Renting out your home can be challenging. This is especially true when you rent to the same tenants for many years and then ask them to move out.

This was the case for a woman who wanted to return to her home but was faced with a sour response.

Not Quite a Dream Home

The original poster, Ava, who is now 38 years old, begins by sharing that she purchased a four-bedroom home in semi-rural Buckinghamshire when she was 23.

The house was lovely and quite large, but the town wasn’t fun for a 23-year-old.

Because Ava was bored in her new town, she listed the house for rent at age 26. She then moved to London for two years before moving to Australia.

Great Tenants Move In

Ava was lucky to find a great family to rent her home. The family included a husband and wife with well-paying jobs, one child, and no pets.

They always paid rent on time and got good inspection reports. There were never any complaints from neighbors, either.

Ready to Come Home

Ava spent the past 14 years of her life traveling the world. However, she’s ready to move back to her home in Buckinghamshire.

She gave the family three months’ notice to move out—two more months than she was obligated to provide.

Unhappy about Sudden Move

The tenants texted Ava asking if she was moving in with family or not. Ava explained she does not have a husband or kids but wants to set her roots again.

They called her selfish for kicking them out after 15 years and wanting to enjoy a big house all for herself.

Suggestion to Purchase Home

Finally, the tenants went as far as to say that Ava should sell them the home for the price she originally bought it for.

However, that wouldn’t be fair for several reasons, one being that the price has doubled since she bought it.

Threatening an Eviction

Ava wasn’t happy about this suggestion. She mentioned that they could dictate rules in a house they own—but not one she owns.

She explained that they needed to be packed and out of her home by a specific date, or she would evict them and sue for the costs.

Input from Friends

Ava’s friends are on the tenants’ side. They told Ava that she shouldn’t kick them out of their home and that she didn’t need such a large place for herself.

Selling and Starting Fresh?

The friends also mentioned that Ava could sell or rent her student flat to get a deposit for a different home nearby. However, Ava doesn’t want to start again with a new mortgage, especially considering that her large home is 90% paid off.

Not Their Home

“You’re not getting them out of THEIR home, you’re getting them out of YOUR house,” one person commented. “They signed a rental contract and must respect it.”

Inappropriate Behavior from Tenants

“It’s normal in situations like this for the tenants to be disappointed, sad, and miffed, but they’ve taken it to the next level, which is completely inappropriate,” another said.

Just Want the House!

Ava simply wants to live in her home. Although it’s easy to see why the family does not want to move after all this time, Ava’s request is reasonable.

Ava has decided to ask her estate agent for tips and offer to give the family longer to move out. Hopefully, they can resolve the situation civilly.
