Many new parents face sticker shock when welcoming a child into the world since, quite frankly, a little one needs many items specific to babies. In a recent online discussion about the best and worst baby purchases, new parents can make, countless moms and dads confessed to some things that, in retrospect, turned out to be gigantic wastes of money! So here are a few items that any new mom or dad may want to rethink buying.

1. Pacifiers

Having plenty of pacifiers on hand for a newborn to suck on seems like Parenting 101. However, more than one mother warns that not all babies use them – and if that’s the case, you’ll find many unused pacifiers lying around. Many suggest parents take a “wait and see” approach before investing in a pacifier.

2. Ball Pits

Attention spans for little ones are notoriously short-lived. Suppose you’re thinking of ponying up the cash for a ball pit for your baby to roll around and play in. In that case, you should think again: one woman laments that her baby got bored of it after just a few minutes, leaving the parents completely regretting the mini playground that was set up in their living room. They might as well start calling these things money pits!

3. Expensive Baby Clothes

According to many parents, investing any amount of hard-earning money into expensive clothes for your newborn is pointless. Not only will they grow out of every piece of clothing rapidly, but babies will also destroy clothes by spitting up over them – or worse (I don’t think I need to spell out this part for anyone).

One or two nice outfits are okay for family photos or birthdays but don’t feel wrong about skimping on overpriced baby clothes that will get ruined anyway.

4. Muslin Cloths

Although marketed as hypoallergenic and super-comfortable for babies, many parents advise steering clear of purchasing muslin cloths for swaddling. They may be softer and slightly warmer for your child, but that’s their only advantage over traditional cotton clothes and swaddling towels. If your newborn spits or throws up (or worse!) on them, stains in muslin fabric are notoriously impossible to get rid of.

5. Most High-Tech Toys

One mom recently decided that simpler is better when it comes to toys for her kids. “Any flashing or blinky fancy toy holds her interest when she gets it, but then she’s lost all interest after about ten minutes if we’re lucky,” she confesses.

“We can’t help buying her toys that we think she’ll like. We need to get out of that trap because the kids seem to like simple things more, like a silicone spatula or a ball.” Experts argue that simpler toys better capture a child’s imagination rather than distract them with flashing lights and sounds.

6. Bumbo Seats

Designed as floor seating for babies who can’t yet sit up independently, Bumbo seats are constantly identified as a purchase parents wish they didn’t make – and for a good reason.

Although the device works as advertised, many moms and dads reveal that their children quickly grew out of the share after a few months, rendering the Bumbo a prohibitive paperweight from that point forward.

7. Baby Shoes

Make no mistake: few things are cuter than an adorable pair of baby shoes or sneakers. However, nearly all parents regret buying baby shoes, kicking themselves for succumbing to the cute factor and buying something their child can’t even fully use yet. “No human needs shoes until they start walking,” says one mom. “Don’t buy expensive footwear for your 4-month-old.” Words to live by!

8. Small Feeding Bottles

One of the most unnecessary purchases a new parent can make is buying too small bottles. Before you know it, your newborn will require more formula, rendering your tiny bottle obsolete. Instead, purchasing multiple larger bottles, such as 150ml-sized ones, is best to future-proof your feeding strategy.

9. Cheap Baby Monitors

The discussion was filled with plenty of parents calling out “trash” baby monitors they bought on sale from Amazon. Hence, it’s a safe bet to do your homework and buy a quality baby monitor with plenty of positive reviews.

Countless new parents complained that these Amazon baby monitors would cut out, make strange noises, or even turn off completely, making them seriously regret not paying more for a quality product. So make sure to avoid the mistake these moms and dads made.

10. Too Many Stuffed Animals

Most parents reported that buying more than one or two stuffed animals is overkill for a child. “Our twins quickly lose interest in all but a handful of their animals, and they’re never seen again,” reveals one dad. There’s a lesson to be learned here: spending money on your baby, just like on yourself, is a lesson in moderation.
