Family drama often erupts over money. In this case, a father believes one of his daughters is being favored over the other in an inheritance dispute. He turned to a popular online forum to determine if his anger was justified.

A Favorite Granddaughter

The story begins with the original poster (OP), Michael, stating that his mother-in-law has two grandchildren: Emma (22) and Riley (21). However, Michael claims that Emma is the favorite as she wants to follow in her grandma’s footsteps.

A Gift for One

When the grandmother moved into a nursing home, she had to disperse some of her assets to afford it. This led her to give Emma, the “favorite grandchild,” her tools and a small piece of land with several greenhouses.

An Equal Inheritance

The grandmother also set up a trust worth $30,000 to be split between the two grandchildren equally upon her passing. The trust was to be dispersed when the youngest, Riley, turned 21.

A Shocking Discovery

Unfortunately, the grandmother passed away over a year ago. When Riley turned 21, they were ready to split the inheritance. However, they were met with shocking news: their grandma established a clause that anyone who had a child before 21 would be disqualified from the money. Riley has a two-year-old son, rendering her ineligible.

Michael believes this clause was intentional. His oldest daughter, Emma, had a hysterectomy around the time the clause was formed. There was no way for her to have children, conveniently ensuring she would have sole access to the inheritance.

Anger Brewing

Michael is furious that Riley will not have access to the money. He states that it’s not shocking, though, considering Riley’s grandma never spent time with Riley and did not treat her like a real grandchild.

Michael truly believes that the grandmother did this on purpose. He thinks the grandmother did this solely for Riley to “fail” and prove to her, once more, that she was not the favorite grandchild.

One Daughter, All the Money

Michael has requested that Emma do the right thing and split the money with Riley. However, Emma isn’t interested. She believes that they should not fight the will.

Disagreement Between Parents

Aside from the drama brewing between the sisters, there is also calamity between Michael and his wife. Michael’s wife is trying to stay 100% neutral, which isn’t helping the cause. Michael is distressed that his wife isn’t on his side.

Not Your Money

One user chimed in, stating, “Sure, I can see how you want to split evenly, but it’s not your money to make decisions on. You literally have no claim to it, or can make any decisions regarding it…”

Personal Experience

Another commented and shared their personal story, saying, “My grandmother had many grandchildren. I got more in the will than others when she died. Me and her were very close. I don’t think I was obligated to make it equal.”

Michael maintains that Riley should receive half the trust money, even though she is disqualified according to the rules. He is now angry at Emma and his wife for not agreeing.
