Some folks love to burn through cash in ways that make the rest of us scratch our heads. Everyone has a guilty pleasure or two, but sometimes people take it to a whole new, wallet-emptying level. They say money can’t buy happiness, but it sure can buy you several bizarre things you don’t really need. Try not to cringe too hard as members of an online forum explore twelve surprising ways people throw their money away.

1. Bottoms Up, Cash Down

Many people agree that bars are like the Bermuda Triangles for hard-earned cash. One person even expressed how they found it mindblowing that people toss money away on drinks that cost a fortune. Why would someone be okay spending $8 for a single beer when a six-pack is half the price? And let’s not get started on those insane $15 cocktails. You could stock a whole home bar for that price. Doesn’t make sense, does it?

2. Wedding Woes

Most of us have a dream wedding planned, but that dream can become an absolute nightmare for our bank account if we’re not careful. Several folks seem to agree that in the chase for a fairytale wedding, people end up throwing their money away on lavish food, clothes, and decorations that often go to waste. Someone even suggested that instead of being extra and going into “crippling debt,” people should chill out and save up by doing something smaller and perhaps more intimate.

3. The Pricey Paradox: Purchasing for Protest

That’s one trendy way to challenge consumerism, but product destruction is only self-destruction in disguise. When you burn expensive products, hard-earned cash goes up in smoke, quite literally. Not to mention the harm it does to the environment.  An effective protest should ideally hurt the system, not your bank balance.

4. Mini Fashion, Big Waste

Why buy brand-name clothes for babies who grow faster than weeds? They couldn’t care less about fashion. Some folks like to play dress up with their toddlers, only to sell that designer wardrobe at a yard sale a few months later. A commentator shared that someone they knew bought their baby Gucci socks worth 500 dollars! Some people really need a crash course in baby fashionomics.

5. Inboxes With Pricetags

Taking retro to new heights, one user’s mom is still shelling out for her MSN email! Despite the heavy subscription charges, another respondent shared that their 90-year-old mother clings to AOL like a family heirloom. Who knew tech nostalgia could be so expensive? I guess old e-habits die hard, and some people can’t let go to move on to newer, cheaper things.

6. Doctoring the Truth: Lying to Your Medics

Lying to your doctors? Now, that’s as smart as hiring a plumber and plugging your own sink. Turns out some folks are aiming for an Oscar-worthy acting performance rather than actual help when they’re at the doctor’s office. Someone admitted to lying to their therapist and being caught red-handed several times.

7. NFT: Not Funds-friendly Territory

Owning an NFT is adjacent to being one of those cool kids with rare Pokemon cards, except some cost millions and aren’t worth it. Especially since we don’t know how long this NFT ship will sail. One user even prophesied that next, we will buy digital proof that we’re not artificial intelligence. At this point, we wouldn’t even be surprised if that happened.

8. Food Delivery Tax

Too many of us are guilty of paying delivery charges that cost half as much as the food. Sounds pretty wasteful unless you’re feeding a football team, right? But a brave fellow confessed that once he’s out of his work clothes, he’s not putting ‘em back on, so the delivery fee is a price he’s willing to pay!

9. Twitter Blue: Get Verified

The social media platform, Twitter, has gone through multiple changes under its new owner, Elon Musk. With the advent of Twitter Blue, individuals can now pay eight dollars per month to become verified. That’s a whopping ninety-six dollars per year just so you can have a blue tick next to your name on the app.

10. Spending Real Money on Virtual Awards

People are paying to give digital awards on online forums, and some of these aren’t cheap, which is bad news for users’ bank accounts due to limited free options. Trading real money for virtual gifts — it looks like there’s a heavy price for generosity in this economy.

11. Bottled Water Blues

Everyone’s gulped down this big mistake — paying for water is like buying air. Many agree it’s a waste of money, and doesn’t protect you from health risks, so what’s the point? One problem solver suggested that we should skip the bottle and dive into a better solution: invest in a filter and use tap war.

12. Starbucks Fever: A Pandemic for Pockets

The hype is heavy, but so is the bill. Many commenters agree that Starbucks was pricey for its taste, but it’s so accessible and trendy they can’t seem to quit. One guy even spilled the beans when he suggested that his homemade coffee is cheaper and better than the $10 he wastes on a Starbucks drink, but an occasional treat doesn’t hurt. As long as it remains occasional.
