While no job will feel like sunshine and rainbows every day, there are key signs that may indicate it’s time to move on. From toxic work environments to limited growth opportunities, there are a lot of red flags to keep an eye out for.

Going to Work Feels Like a Nightmare

Going to work can feel like a drag depending on where you stand with your current job. The thought of having to show up each morning is too much to bear, but you come in anyways because you have bills to pay. If you feel this way, it’s time to seek other opportunities.

Imagine having to use your vacation time to avoid coming in for work. This is a huge red flag and means you should start planning to escape from your job.

Your Personal Happiness Is Compromised

It’s a good rule of thumb to immediately shut off from work once you step away from the office or your laptop. However, some people feel anxiety drag on after work hours. Worst of all, your happiness may be impacted if work is always on your mind.

Sunday Scaries

If you’re constantly experiencing the Sunday Scaries or feeling anxious about starting work on Monday, it’s a clear sign something is wrong.

Some things are within your control, such as meeting deadlines and ensuring you have a manageable workload. However, if you’ve been experiencing the Sunday Scaries for a while, this most likely means it’s time to move on.

Disagreeing With Your Boss

A company may have a great culture overall, but your team’s culture still sets the tone for your daily work routine. If you’re constantly bickering with your boss or are consistently getting “micromanaged,” that’s a huge red flag. Odds are your boss isn’t going to change overnight; you’ll have a long year ahead of you if you don’t create an exit plan.

Feeling Happy About Being Sick

Physical health is one of the most important things for your readiness to work. Without this, everything else falls apart. However, if you’re feeling slightly happier about being in the hospital or out sick, this is your sign that it’s time to leave your job.

Going “Above and Beyond” Is Expected

A good leader or company has proper procedures and expectations for each role. If you regularly go above and beyond but get reprimanded when you “meet your expectations,” exit as soon as possible.

Not Getting Promoted

Working harder is not always enough for companies. Unfortunately, favoritism and luck often play a role in who gets a promotion. Instead of waiting patiently for an opportunity to arise, ask for it. If you get denied, look elsewhere. Don’t settle.

People Around You Are Leaving

Company turnover happens year-round. However, if you notice people on your team and within your company leaving, this is a red flag. You should stop and assess whether or not to do the same.

This could hint at something coming that you’re not aware of or that your company is making a huge budget cut. Either way, you should start making an exit plan to be prepared.

Getting Mocked

Each company has its own HR policies, but proper respect should be expected anywhere you work. If your boss or coworker is mocking or yelling at you, bring this up to HR. If nothing is done, quickly move out of this company.
