Previously, a woman agreed to the low pay to help her needy friend. However, now that her friend can pay her well beyond minimum wage, she doesn’t want to pay up. Now this woman questions if she made the right choice.

Somewhat Fair Compensation

The original poster, whom we’ll refer to as Lori, provided childcare for her friend Amber.

Despite getting paid below minimum wage, Lori agreed to help Amber because she would have the flexibility to work from home.

Plus, Lori could squeeze in some time to study for her classes.

Balancing Friendship and Financial Value

Amber’s husband was against leaving their baby with a random babysitter because he had a terrible experience when he was young.

Since Amber and Lori had been friends for years, Amber and her husband felt comfortable leaving their baby with her.

However, the tables would soon turn.

One day, Amber won the lottery — $740,000.

When Money Changes Hands

Once the money came in, Amber and her husband purchased two cars worth $60,000 each.

They also traveled to Cuba and Mexico while Lori happily took care of their baby.

Advocating for Fair Wages

Eventually, Lori felt it was fair to request more money.

She didn’t plan on requesting a substantial amount—she only wanted minimum wage.

An Unfair Denial

To Lori’s surprise, Amber and her husband declined to pay Lori minimum wage.

They claimed it was “too expensive.”

Reassessing Compensation in Changing Circumstances

Knowing they had the money to pay, Lori decided to stop babysitting for them.

This development meant Amber and her husband would no longer have a babysitter because they didn’t trust many people.

Respecting Your Worth

Lori was left with mixed feelings.

She knew Amber and her husband could afford to pay her the minimum wage, but they had declined for an absurd reason.

Ruined From the Start

“The thing is, unless they are smart with their money (which it doesn’t seem they are), the number is limited,” one reader commented. “They will run out. It’s not like one of them got a new, amazing job paying a lot more. Their finances are basically doomed.”

Bad Spending Habits

“No judgment, but if it makes you feel better, a $740,000 lottery win is probably close to $400,000 after taxes,” another said. “Between the cars and the trips, they have spent [one-third] of their money in [two] months. They will be broke by the end of the year.”

Too Noble?

“…While $740K is a nice chunk of change, blowing $120K on cars is absolutely silly,” another reader said. “Go find a better job. I’m shocked you only asked for minimum wage as well.”

Lori was a good friend for providing years of childcare for Amber and her husband for below minimum wage.  We can only hope she gets compensated properly for her hard work.
