Saving money can’t always be about choosing the cheapest gas station. Sometimes, avoiding trouble is worth the extra cost.

Here’s a list of gas stations people claim give off “sketchy” vibes. From visitors receiving blank stares to racing heartbeats, here are some reasons to avoid these places at all costs.

Coatesville, Pennsylvania

Some hate the fast life of the city, but I’m willing to bet they wouldn’t like the extreme opposite.

Empty Grocery Store

“I was with a friend who had come up from Mexico and we were staying a few nights at his grandmother’s ranch nearby. Coatesville was the only town around where we could find Mexican ingredients.

“This is an old steel town that feels post-apocalyptic, everyone there didn’t really seem to be doing anything or going anywhere, it was so creepy. The store we ended up going to had nearly empty shelves and I think the guys were a bit surprised to see us there. All in all just very strange and eerie.”

What People Think About Coatesville

“Coatesville freaks me out but downingtown [sic] is just as bad bc it seems normal but it’s still a little off.”

Gary, Indiana

Imagine driving down the road and seeing a man walking casually in his underwear with a baseball hat. To make matters worse, all the nearby buildings have their windows cracked or covered up.

If You Hear This, Drive Away

This was the reality for a brave soul who wandered off the highway in Gary, Indiana, a few decades back.

He recalls pulling up to a gas station and immediately hearing, “Get back on the highway son. It’s not safe here.” This man drove off without looking back.

“Me and a friend were driving through Gary one night when we stopped at a red light and a police car pulled up right next to me and said “What the **** do you think you’re doing? Do not stop at the red lights here, you’re safer if you run it and get out of here.”

Tiger, Georgia

A couple recalled visiting Tiger, Georgia, arriving at their Airbnb just as the sun was setting. What looked beautiful in pictures seemed like a house straight from a horror movie. The doorways were narrow, with just enough space to go through, and the basement had a rug covering another door.

Eating as Quickly as Possible

As the couple searched for a place to eat during the evening, they couldn’t find a single restaurant that was open, except for one called The Last Dive Bar on Earth. The couple quickly ate their food and went back to their Airbnb.

Two Different Towns in One

The moment they returned, they heard other couples talking about the great food they had had. It wasn’t until the next morning that the couple saw restaurants they hadn’t seen the evening prior. It was as if this town had a switch for what it looked like between day and night.

A Walmart to Remember

“I went to a church retreat in Tiger GA when I was a kid. I didn’t see any of the town, but some of the adults went to the Walmart and noted that it felt like the whole town showed up to drink in the Walmart parking lot on a Saturday morning.

“Unrelated to the town itself, two of the girls at the retreat got lost in the woods, and search and rescue had to find them.”

Don’t stop here unless you like to be in the middle of nowhere. One man claims that the only signs of humanity around his motel were a mobile home and a grocery store. The nearest McDonald’s was two hours away!

Avoid this town unless you like people staring at you while you fill your gas tank.

“I don’t know, we only passed a few then went back onto the highway. everyone stopped to stare at us as we got gas and my mother felt weird walking back to the car.”
