We’ve all paid a fee that’s left us scratching our heads.
People online expressed their frustration and shared examples of fees they’ve paid for things that should’ve been free. From transaction fees to cheap Wi-Fi, get ready to be blown away. You may be holding your wallet more tightly afterward.
Wi-Fi During Travel
Hotels aren’t the only place where your money can be wasted. Unless companies are running a promotion on their Wi-Fi, it’s probably not worth paying $20+ for a few hours’ of distraction. Often, you’ll be too tired to do anything for too long.
Hidden Fees
If something is “too good to be true,” it is. Some users shared horror stories of buying cheap concert tickets only to pay high fees during the event day. Be sure when purchasing online that the prices you see are final.
Processing Fees
Why do you have to pay a fee to pay your bills? You’d think companies would include this in retail pricing, but apparently not.
Premium Wi-Fi
Nowadays, Wi-Fi can seem like an addition to many, but should you be charged for it? It depends on who you ask. A user claimed they had to pay for Wi-Fi at the five-star hotel they were staying at. Hopefully, their five-star experience made it worthwhile.
Activation Fees
If you’ve recently upgraded your phone, you were most likely charged an “activation fee.” What exactly is this, though?
Water
If you’re at an event or at the movies, water can cost you a few dollars. Most companies package bad or average-quality tap water and charge a premium price for it. You’re better off buying Fiji water and taking it to your event. At least you know this water has vitamins.
Caller ID
“Caller ID. It’s literally data that’s embedded in the packets that are coming to me anyway. Paying 7 dollars a month to unfilter the data is gouging in its purest form.”
Packets of Sauce
This will vary from place to place, but some Dunkin’ Donuts or local restaurants will charge you for extra ketchup or honey. If a company is being this stingy, consider taking your business elsewhere.
Installation Fees
Cable companies typically charge installation fees. The worst part is that often if you switch back to an old carrier, you might have to pay for what was already set up.
Routers
Many companies charge a monthly fee for your internet and TV router. Consider biting the bullet and buying your next router on eBay instead. Often, you’ll recover your money in a year or so, and you won’t have to pay a monthly fee.
Useless Services
“[In] Denmark we have something called [a] Media License, which serves as a paycheck for ONE company called DR. Basically what it does is it makes this DR channel free, and provides [the] budget for a radio show and a website.
“The thing is, you MUST pay it. Even if you’re never ever even slightly close to using any of these services (they suck, most never do). You can’t really avoid paying it unless you DON’t [sic] have a smartphone, computer, tv or radio because if you do ‘you have the possibility to utilize one of DR’s services’… [it] sucks… It’s about 210 USD every half year…”
Air at Gas Stations
With so many gas stations offering free air pumps, there’s no reason to pay. And if you prefer adding air to your tires at your convenience, consider buying an affordable air pump online.
Printing Paper
Why students still need to print their papers at colleges is beyond many. With the high price tag for college tuition, a user expressed their frustration with having to pay money to print at their college’s library.
Public Parking
You’ve most likely overpaid for parking if you live near large cities. Paying $15-$50 for less than two hours is extremely overpriced. The problem is you’d either opt to find street parking which can take a while, or park in a restricted area where your car might get towed.
