Families don’t always see eye to eye, especially when it comes to parenting. A man recently discovered this when his niece and nephew ruined some expensive supplies, prompting him to ask his brother-in-law to cover the damages. However, his brother-in-law’s response forced him to escalate the situation.

Kids’ Innocence?

OP and his wife love to draw and experiment with different art mediums.

Because of this, they’ve accumulated a large collection of art supplies over the years. Since they both have a passion for art, they have converted one of the rooms in their house into an art studio.

A Studio Worth Thousands

OP estimated that their studio holds a few thousand dollars worth of supplies, and for this reason, he always keeps this room locked.

OP’s most important supplies are his pencils and crayons, which are relatively expensive.

Unleashing Vengeance

One day, OP and his wife had family over to celebrate a birthday.

Everything was going as expected until OP noticed that his brother-in-law’s kids, ages six and seven, were nowhere to be found.

Shocking Revenge Plot

OP quickly recalled that he hadn’t locked the door to his studio that day.

“I asked my SIL if she knew where they were. She said that they were drawing in the other room.”

This is when things start heading south.

A Messy Surprise Awaits

After asking around, the OP quickly ran to his studio and found a surprise.

“I immediately rushed over to the art room and found it was a total mess,” he said.

To OP’s surprise, he found that his art studio was messy. The worst part was that his precious pencils and crayons were destroyed.

The kids had applied massive force to the crayons and pencils, ruining the tips.

“I yelled at them to get out and they started crying.”

Naturally, OP felt defeated. Shortly after seeing the mess in his art room, he yelled at the kids to leave immediately.

OP’s brother-in-law quickly ran to OP’s art studio and yelled at OP, stating, “[T]hey’re just kids and it’s just markers.”

Unexpected Backlash

OP’s wife tried to defuse the situation with no luck.

This triggered OP’s brother-in-law, who started to yell at OP’s wife, stating that they “can’t have this much art supplies and not expect kids wanting to use it.”

A Fight to the End

OP did not stand down after having his art studio destroyed.

He demanded that his brother-in-law pay to replace the ruined supplies, which OP’s brother-in-law rejected.

Sorry, I Can’t Hear You

OP was left feeling devastated.

Shortly after the incident, OP reached out to a lawyer friend to help him with the matter, and shortly afterward, he decided to take his brother-in-law to small claims court.

Now, he and his wife are being told they’re ridiculous for taking this route.

“I totaled up the damages and I needed to replace about 375$ and found that the kids drew on a piece I had spent the past week working on as well as ruining a finished piece Sally did. I sent him a bill and he blocked me.”

Unmasking Opinions

“Parents need to watch their own kids,” wrote one user. “How entitled is it to just send them to a room in someone else’s house and tell them to go wild with whatever is there without even asking?”

What People Truly Think About Art

“I will never understand the philosophy of ‘Kids like that stuff, therefore, it’s okay for my kids to use.’ I GIVE PERMISSION to my friends and their kids, and they STILL ask before grabbing any of my toys,” commented another user.

Inside the Minds

“I spend the entire visit watching my daughter like a hawk because A) I don’t want her to get hurt on people’s floor knives and B) I don’t want her to damage their stuff! The thought of just letting her rummage through a room in someone’s house is like a nightmare,” responded a third commenter.

The consequences of Letting Personal Disputes Escalate

You might think it’s wrong to defend your personal belongings, even in the heat of the moment.

In this case, OP and his wife received backlash for requesting payment for their damaged art supplies.

You could argue that the art studio should’ve been locked, but we’re all human, right?

What would you do in this scenario?
