Everything is expensive these days. Whether saving up to buy a house, living on a fixed income, or simply wanting to live within your means, it isn’t easy. A popular internet forum says these lifestyle changes will save you money. Are you doing these?

1. Public Transportation

If at all possible, use public transportation instead of owning a car. Walking or riding your bicycle is another option for getting from point A to point B. Cars are expensive because of the original purchase price and monthly payment. They also need gas, maintenance, and insurance. For those who live in an area where they can get around without a car, this is a great way to save a lot of money.

2. Cut Cable

We have all heard this one before, but do you need premium cable? Costs continue to rise, and the quality of entertainment is going down. Most shows are on streaming now. So instead of paying for cable, head to the store and buy a cheap antenna. Hook that up so you can still watch local channels if you cannot live without them.

3. Shop Around

Always be willing to change your cell phone plan, insurance carrier, and cable service (if you keep it). I am sure you have heard these stories before, but when I had DirectTV, whenever the bill would go up, I would call and complain.

They would send me to a manager every time and lower the price again. The same goes for Sirius XM Radio. While these are both luxuries, your costs can be reduced if you are willing to call and speak to someone.

4. Cash Back and Rewards Credit Cards

There are a lot of credit card options that offer rewards, such as airline miles and cash back. Instead of using cash to pay for things, always use your card and pay it off at the end of the month.

That way, you will be earning on all of your purchases. Just be sure to budget correctly and not get to the point where you cannot pay off the card. The point of paying it off as you go is that you will not be charged any interest, which is often quite high.

5. Use Coupons

Clip coupons whenever possible. Many grocery stores now have cell phone apps where you can digitally clip coupons. When purchasing online, always do a quick Google search for a promo code. You can usually find a variety of discounts, from free shipping to 25% off. It may take some extra time, but it is worth it.

6. Buy Used

Buying used often makes sense, depending on why people sell their used items. Things people get rid of for purely aesthetic reasons, such as furniture, are especially likely to have a lot of remaining use in them. Websites like eBay and Craigslist have vastly improved the liquidity and efficiency of their used goods markets, but be careful to check you’re getting a good deal.

7. Carry A Refillable Water Bottle

Instead of purchasing drinks or water wherever you go, carry a refillable water bottle with you. Similarly, order water instead of a beverage when eating at a restaurant. Not only will this save you a lot of money, but it is also healthier.

8. Eat At Home More

Going out to a nice restaurant is something that everyone enjoys. Still, they are relatively expensive when you consider how much it would cost to eat at home. I am not saying to go out to eat, but cooking at home more often will save you a lot of money, especially when considering travel costs and the tip you leave for the waiter. Plus, when you prepare your food, you can make it exactly how you like it.

9. Recycle Cans

Another way to save money that takes a little bit of effort is recycling cans and bottles. If you live in a state where this is an option, know that you already pay a deposit fee when you purchase them. Taking the time to put them aside and occasionally go to a recycling machine will give you a nice chunk of change back.

10. Find Free Entertainment

There is plenty of free entertainment everywhere you look. Many museums do not have fees attached to them, and parks are always open to the public. Simply do an internet search for your town or state, and you will be surprised at all of the places you can visit for no cost.
