This man has always been financially responsible. His brother, on the other hand, leaves jobs when they get too hard and constantly mooches off of his family. When the man was expected to pay for his jobless brother’s expenses yet again, he finally put his foot down.
Unstable Employment History
The original poster (OP), Jim, has a brother, Brandon, who cannot hold a job for more than a few months. Brandon has had over 20 jobs in the past 12 years—an average of two annually.
Quitting Jobs for Unreasonable Reasons
While most people quit their jobs for valid reasons, Brandon leaves because his jobs keep him from attending parties or last-minute trips. Despite this, Brandon believes he is the best worker.
He left his recent job, making $70,000 annually, because he felt entitled to more money than his supervisor.
Fortunately for Brandon, his parents have always helped him get back on his feet—until now. After Brandon quit his last job, his parents stopped supporting him financially.
Brother Seeking Help
Here’s where things headed south. Since Brandon’s parents would no longer support him financially, Brandon went to Jim for help.
Refusing Financial Assistance
Brandon asked Jim if he could stay at his place while he got back on his feet. He also asked Jim to pay for a few of his car loan payments.
Tough Love or Unfair Treatment
Brandon’s solution for Jim to afford the extra payments was for Jim to work overtime. Easy, right?
Refusing Financial Assistance
After hearing Brandon’s demands, Jim declined to help.
“I flat out told him that I would not give him a dime,” Jim explained.
Brandon didn’t take Jim’s rejection lightly. They got into a heated argument, and Jim had to threaten to call the cops.
“The thing with moochers is that they will never ever stop mooching whilst others condone and enable the mooching behavior,” one commenter advised.
“Your brother seems to think the world owes him a living,” another person said. “Your parents are partly to blame for that.”
Someone else added, “[I]f he was arrested it would be that much harder for him to get a job. Which in hindsight makes some sense but at the time he refused to budge from my couch.”
Encouraging Brother to Take Accountability
After the argument, Brandon’s family thinks Jim went too far, and Jim is left with mixed feelings about whether he made the right choice.
