Two sisters found themselves in a predicament when one had enough money for her dream college and the other didn’t. Yet, some extenuating circumstances impacted the outcome. What will happen to these two sisters’ futures?
Growing Up Without Biological Dad
The original poster (OP), Marie, shared that her father passed away when she was just three years old. However, her father left her a substantial amount of money, and her grandparents offered to pay for her tuition.
Mom Remarries and a Sisterhood Forms
Marie stated that her mother remarried when she was six. This marriage brought along a new stepsister, Aubrey. The two formed a bond, and Marie swore she would love her stepsister like a real sister and always help her out.
No Savings for the Future
While family life mostly went well for the siblings, there was one major caveat. While Marie received money from her deceased father and her grandparents, her mother and stepfather didn’t save much for Aubrey’s college tuition.
An Odd Request
Worried about how Aubrey would pay for schooling, Marie’s mother asked Marie to pay for half of Aubrey’s tuition.
A Big N-O
Flabbergasted, Marie responded, “No.” She maintained that the money was strictly for her, as her deceased father left it for her, and Aubrey had no connection to him.
Anger Within the Family
When Marie said “No” to the financial request, anger began brewing in the household. Aubrey and her mother had been counting on Marie’s help, and they were upset by her answer.
Is Community College the Answer?
Aubrey decided to seek help from her counselor. Her counselor informed her that she should rethink what colleges to apply to, as her dream school would put her in a lot of debt. The counselor recommended community college to save money.
Tears Over College Choices
Aubrey was devastated at the thought of attending community college over her dream school. She said her life would be ruined if she had to go to community college.
Feelings of Being Second
As she became increasingly upset, Aubrey started thinking she was second to Marie.
Just a Suggestion
However, Marie tried to point out that she didn’t have to go to community college. It was just an option.
Life’s Not Fair
“…[H]onestly, next time she says ‘it’s not fair..’ just reply with ‘it’s not fair my dad died when I was a toddler and [I] didn’t have him my whole life but here we are.’”
Parents Should Have Saved
“…The parents put some money away into a college savings for the stepsister. Even though OP had an inheritance, the fair thing would have been for them to still put an equal amount away for OP. Not doing that is directly favoring the stepsister over OP…”
Nothing Wrong With Community College
“…There is nothing wrong with community college. There [are] plently [sic] of people who went to community [college] first to save money…”
Take Out a Loan
Marie ultimately decided she didn’t owe Aubrey anything. If Aubrey wants to go to an expensive school, she can take out loans and pay for it herself.
