The original poster (OP), Mark, and his brother grew up in a divided household; after their parents divorced, they moved in with their paternal grandparents. Their father effectively abandoned them when he remarried. However, their grandparents cared for them and even paid for their mother to go back to school.
A Journey of Resilience
When Mark’s father remarried, he wanted nothing to do with his ex-family. He never paid any child support to help raise Mark and his brother.
Mark’s mother was a stay-at-home mom. Under the care of Mark’s paternal grandparents, they all survived the absence of Mark’s father.
Grandparents’ Rescue
Mark’s grandparents were disappointed in the decisions and behavior of Mark’s father. They took it upon themselves to support their daughter-in-law and grandkids.
Grandparents’ Will
Mark’s grandmother passed away a few years ago, followed by his grandfather. Mark’s grandfather left almost everything to Mark, his brother, and their mother in his will. Ironically, Mark’s father was only left with $500, even though he was their only child. The grandkids from Mark’s second marriage were given $10,000 each.
The Reasoning Behind the Grandfather’s Decision
Mark’s grandfather said his decision to give Mark and the brother bigger portions of the inheritance was fair because they grew up without a father, while the other grandkids had a father who cared for them. Mark and his brother’s inheritance was over $100,000 each.
Disgruntled Father
Mark’s father was dissatisfied with the will. He approached Mark, Mark’s brother, and their mom with a proposition to redistribute the inheritance. He stated that Mark’s stepsiblings were going through financial hardship and needed the money. Mark and his family refused; Mark’s mom asked his father about the missed child support payments.
