Money can often cause tension within families. Here’s the story of a boy who lost his mother at a young age and made an effort to stay in contact with his mother’s family. Now, he must decide whether to share his grandparents’ inheritance with his sister.

After a year, Leo’s father started dating again and eventually married Claire. Shortly after, Leo began to act out, not accepting the changes that were happening.

When Leo acted out, his father would remind him that parenting alone was hard and that Ruby, Leo’s younger sister, needed a mother figure. Leo’s dad even convinced Leo’s maternal grandparents to tell Leo everything would turn out okay.

However, Leo continued to resist these changes and acted out; his younger sister was more accepting of the changes to their family.

Leo felt that his younger sister’s acceptance was due to the fact that she wasn’t old enough when their mother died to have the same attachment to her that he did. Needless to say, Leo wasn’t happy when his younger sister started calling Claire “Mom.”

As things progressed, Claire began referring to Leo as her son. However, Leo always corrected her.

Eventually, Leo’s father and Claire had kids, and Claire wanted to adopt Leo and Ruby. Ruby had no problems with this, but Leo refused.

Despite Leo’s dad and Claire pushing for adoption, a judge took Leo’s side and denied it.

When Leo turned 18, he went to live with an aunt from his father’s side who had always supported him.

Inheritance Dispute

A few years later, Leo’s grandparents on his mother’s side passed away, leaving $250,000. The wills stated that this would be split between their legal grandchildren; however, since Ruby was legally Claire’s daughter, she no longer qualified to get any of her grandparents’ inheritance.

Leo claims that Ruby never made an effort to have a relationship with their grandparents. Despite this, Ruby believes it isn’t fair that she doesn’t get any inheritance.

“Interesting how she only wants to be family now money is involved,” replied a commenter.

Accepting the Consequences

“She made her choice and that’s [sic] hers alone. Your grandparents made theirs. You owe her nothing,” said another comment.

A Calculated Move

“…your grandparents had plenty of time to change their will. They used the specific [term] legal grandchildren for a specific reason. Because they wanted you to inherit from them. They assume Lucy will inherit from her other grandparents and she probably will,” a commenter concludes.

Ruby had an easier time moving on after her mother’s death and had little interest in maintaining touch with that side of her family. But now that Leo is receiving an inheritance from his grandparents from his mother’s side, Ruby feels entitled to some money.
