For various reasons, Joe chose to stay single and not have children; because of this, he is financially well off. Joe managed to retire earlier than most people, and a few family members took notice.

The Unspoken Agreement

Heather, Joe’s sister-in-law, recently called him requesting help paying for her daughter’s wedding. Not having much time to think, Joe reluctantly agreed.

However, Joe and Heather never agreed on the amount. Joe planned on gifting $1,000 in cash and a wedding gift worth the same amount.

Without Joe’s knowledge, Heather started purchasing different things for the wedding. Little did Joe know that Heather was under the assumption that he would pay for it all.

Some time later, Heather called Joe asking for $15,000. Despite Joe’s ability to pay this amount, he refused.

Refusal and Explanation

Joe tried to explain to Heather that he had planned on giving her daughter $1,000, but she pressured him to donate more.

Joe refused to donate more money and told Heather this was a “nice” contribution for being a step-uncle. Heather didn’t take Joe’s response well and quickly began calling him names.

Enough Is Enough

Fed up, Joe angrily told Heather that he would not give any money to her daughter’s wedding and no longer wanted to attend.

Shortly after the heated discussion, Joe’s brother called, apologizing for his wife’s reaction. However, he still asked Joe for $5,000. Joe told his brother he loved him but did not like his wife. He also told his brother that he would not donate any money for the wedding.

Like Heather, Joe’s brother started calling Joe nasty names. Joe was left feeling bad about the situation.

Heated Exchanges and Insults

“I don’t blame you for not giving anything at this point,” one person sympathized. “They are acting so entitled to YOUR money, but just because you have money to spend doesn’t mean you have to spend it on them.”

Sympathetic Comments

“I personally would donate $5,000 to charity in their name,” someone else advised. “Then they’ll get a nice thank you note. Win-win situation.”

Pay for Your Own Wedding

“This is the 21st century and brides/grooms should pay for the majority of their own **** wedding,” another person angrily added.

Initial Intentions and Final Decision

Initially, Joe wanted to help Heather and his brother, but they quickly demanded a substantial amount of money.

Joe’s brother eventually reached out to apologize to him, but their relationship is still rocky, and Joe has no desire to speak to his sister-in-law. He plans to skip the wedding but give his niece a $1,000 gift directly.
