Recently, Laura got engaged, and Josh, without hesitation, offered to pay for Laura’s wedding. However, things quickly went south when Laura told Josh she didn’t want him to walk her down the aisle.

Laura’s justification for this was that neither her mother nor her father “own” her. Therefore, they are not giving her away.

Laura’s statement hurt Josh because he and his wife never considered Laura an object. On the contrary, they did all they could to provide Laura with a wonderful life.

Josh didn’t intend to manipulate Laura’s decision by not paying for the wedding. However, he no longer felt good about it after hearing Laura’s statement.

Josh’s Thoughts

“So, this isn’t about making the wedding about me. Walking her down the aisle (while all eyes are on her anyway) and then sitting down is hardly making the wedding about me. It’s about her attitude.

“She’s had every opportunity in life so far, and to exclude us from this day is a spit in the face. It’s a rejection of everything we’ve done for her, sacrificed for her, given her. It’s selfish.”

An Independent Daughter

“You heard her. She is independent. Independent people deal with their own bills.”

“She’s 19 and getting married, odds are you’ll have more chances.”

Walking Daughter In the Future

“This! She’s soooo independent so she can pay for her own wedding. And then when she’s a little older and wiser and a less [sic] of a teenager, you can walk her down the aisle for her second wedding.”
