Every location in the world has some form of crime, but before settling on a spot for your summer getaway, research the safety of your intended destination. A lot of the time, more dangerous areas decrease their prices to increase tourism, despite unsafe neighborhoods. Here are ten dangerous cities to skip over this summer. 

1. St. Louis, Missouri

Despite having beautiful scenery and an iconic arch, St. Louis makes every dangerous city list. Over the past few years, the city has lost several major manufacturing jobs, leading to an economic downturn and an increase in violent crimes and robberies.

2. Chicago, Illinois

Due to its high violent crime rate, Chicago is one of the most dangerous places in America. Pickpockets and petty thieves stroll the streets, looking for unassuming victims.  If you visit the Windy City, be sure to travel in pairs and be aware of your surroundings.

3. Detroit, Michigan

This city is regarded as the birthplace of Motown music and Detroit-style pizza, as well as being the automobile capital of the world. However, Detroit also serves as one of the most dangerous and violent cities in the U.S. Last year it had the nation’s highest poverty and unemployment rates.

4. Memphis, Tennessee

Memphis gives a beautiful insight into the Tennessean culture, what with the Rock n’ Roll Hall of Fame and delicious barbeque. Thanks to its alarmingly high violent crime rate, it also held last year’s record for the most dangerous city in America.

5. New Orleans, Louisiana

A study claims that New Orleans visitors have an astounding 1 in 18 chance of becoming victims of crimes while visiting the haunted city. The crime rate exceeds 150% of the national average and is in the 98th percentile for safety. This means 98% of the U.S. is safer than the voodoo capital. Hurricanes also affect New Orleans’ infrastructure, elevating the city’s level of danger.

6. Chatanooga, Tennessee

Chatanooga is prone to flooding and other natural disasters that endanger the public. Statistics also show that one in 14 people becomes the victim of a violent or property crime. 

7. Milwaukee, Wisconsin

A typical day in Milwaukee crime consists of violent crimes, fatal assaults, and property crimes. It’s not hard to imagine since the city is known for housing prolific criminals such as Jeffrey Dahmer and Ed Gein. 

8. Little Rock, Arkansas

The tiny town of Little Rock makes headlines for auto theft, violent crimes, vandalism, and fatal attacks. It is rated as the U.S. capital with the highest crime rate in America. 

9. Hartford, Connecticut

Despite having the highest amount of insurance businesses per capita and an intense police presence, the city of Hartford reports tons of crime annually. Criminal accounts making the news recently include drug rings, fatal attacks, and illegal substance charges. 

10. Albuquerque, New Mexico

This past week, grand theft auto, property burglaries, fatal interactions, child neglect, and illegal substance distribution filled Albequerque’s crime breakdown. Those visiting or living in Albuquerque have a one in 17 chance of being the victim of a violent or property crime.
