Although it’s possible to make money on Pinterest without a blog, it’s not recommended. 

Why?

Many of the pins you’ll pin on Pinterest are from other bloggers, but you’d also want to share your pins on your Pinterest account.

Choose a Relevant Domain “.com” Not a Clever One.

Your domain is a tool that should answer the following question: “is this site for me?”

Now you’re ready for the next big step; choosing your web hosting provider. 

I highly recommend Bluehost as the best choice for beginners.

Setup Domain With Bluehost

Once you’ve chosen Bluehost as your web hosting service provider, select their basic Bluehost package. 

If you know blogging is a long-term side-hustle you want to do, consider opting for a 36-month Bluehost plan as it offers the biggest discount. Otherwise, choose the annual subscription.

After choosing which plan, you may then set up your domain with your host. Any plan you choose will allow you to add many domains to be hosted. After a few clicks, you’ll have your website live for your audience to engage with. 

With your website being live, people will get to access the content you post. 

Install WordPress

For Bluehost users, start by going to your Bluehost Control Panel. 

From there, the following steps will just include clicking the ‘My Sites’ tab and then clicking the ‘Create Site’ button to install and log in to your WordPress. 

As an admin, you’ll just have to enter the Admin Information of your WordPress site by installing it in your Bluehost.

  • This list contains all the most popular posts for your competitor getting the most shares.
  • Since you can’t extract this data on the trial version, spend some time manually copying the title and URL link from your competitor’s top post and total # of shares. Do this for the first 1-2 pages for each competitor.
  • On a Google or Excel spreadsheet, manually add a column for the Blog title, Blog post URL, Total Shares, Popular social platform as shown below:

Now that you have data on trending content from your competitors, your goal will be to write content that’s not only longer but offers more value to your audience. 

How? 

By adding more thorough descriptions of gaps, better pictures, and overall better blog structure (i.e., headlines, intro, closing, etc.)

For example, suppose you have a food blog and noticed one of your competitors wrote an article named “5 Tips to Make Oven Baked Pizza”. 

In that case, you’d jot down the essential points covered. You’ll note areas that could be more thorough, like the type of dough to use, the best time to cook, how to source the best toppings, etc.

This task will be a lot if you’re a new blogger, so it’s recommended you focus on posting 12-24 articles your first year to get familiar with the writing process and how to market your content.

Write Quality Content on Your Blog Consistently

Aim to write at least one quality post per month that’s over 2K words. 

It’s better to have one quality post per month than 4-8 posts that aren’t well written. 

Always remember to apply the “quality over quantity” concept in your writing system. 

A quality post is not only proofread but also helps cover a topic clearly and is appropriately optimized. For example, the introduction is clear; all the headlines are optimized to capture your reader’s attention, and much more.

Now that we’re done with your site and contents, we’ll go back to Pinterest. 

Start by setting up a Business Account on Pinterest.

Either you choose to connect your business account to your personal account or make an entirely new one that won’t be attached to your personal accounts. 

Either way, the experience of using Pinterest is the same. 

The next step will be the choice of topics. 

Choose the topics that will bring you pins to save on your Pinterest boards. The top five topics you choose will determine how your Pinterest algorithm will play out. 

After choosing five topics, you can start pinning ideas or creating your own for others to pin. Once you’ve saved a pin, you’ll select which board that pin will go. The board pop-up allows you to create a board on the spot. 

If you prefer being organized, you may create your boards first under your profile section and then smoothly pin your ideas with your boards established. 

Another way is to join group boards to collaborate with friends or other bloggers in the same niche. 

Create Pins Consistently

Choose the right size. Pinterest’s ideal size for a pin is 2:3, with a minimum width and length of 1000 x 1500 pixels for a high-resolution image that will pass everyone’s standard. Although there’s an ideal aspect ratio, you can still experiment with longer pins with a size of 1:2.1. 

Source pleasant images using Canva. Not only are there delightful images on Canva, but there are also Pinterest templates that you can use in editing your pins. You can edit your pins on Canva for free, but if you want to gain access to premium images, you’ll need to subscribe to their premium plans.

Test what works. Pins don’t perform equally great with one another. Some pins can help you gain many followers, while some pins won’t. Experiment with as many ideas as you have, and then you’ll determine what catches your audience’s taste. 

Create great pin descriptions. Descriptions are crucial to getting your pin optimized for search engines. Identify the keywords that most people use when searching for pins related to your niche. 

Leverage branding in your pins. Use your pins to establish an impression of your site’s brand to your audience. Your pins will make your blog and your brand unforgettable for your audiences. 

Each pin you post will be familiar enough for them not to ignore while they’re scrolling through hundreds of pins.

Join Group Boards Each Month 

Joining group boards helps you grow your network of bloggers providing content in the same niche. 

Adding your pins to a group board increases your pin’s exposure. For a writer, it’s like submitting your article to an established publisher to gain more readers. 

How To Find The Best Group Boards

Finding the best group boards for your pins involves knowing your niche and audiences. The more focused your group board is on its niche, the closer you get to your target audience.

In finding the best group board to join, you just need to search for boards related to your specified topic on the search engine. 

You know it’s a group board once you see a collage of profile photos inside a circle frame on the lower left side of the board. 

How To Join Group Boards

Most group boards’ descriptions contain the contact details of the board’s owner. Once you get the email from the board owner, you can send them a request to be added to the group board under his ownership.

If there’s no contact detail on the board’s description, you can go through the group members to see who’s the owner. 

From there, you can directly send them a private message through Pinterest. Mention how the board inspired you to create pins, and share your thoughts of admiration regarding the board’s content. 

Monitor and Drive Traffic To Your Blog

Note: you can repeat the same steps here for your vlog or podcast. Think of Pinterest as a different source for traffic besides Google or paid advertising.

Here are some tips on how you can drive traffic to your website.

How To Drive Traffic From Pinterest

Optimize Pinterest profile. Include niche target keywords in your pin titles and descriptions, as well as your board titles and descriptions. Your profile’s description can also include keywords to help people find your account on the Google search engine. 

Create quality pins. Through quality pins, the sizes and resolution must be ideal. Most of you created pins have to follow at least the guidelines I mentioned earlier. 

Suppose you want striking images and elements incorporated in your pin. In that case, you can pay for premium stock photos or subscribe to Canva’s premium plan if that’s the platform you’re using in editing your pins. 

Apply for rich pins. Rich pins are not your ordinary pins. They are equipped with metadata as the pin’s description, and they are often used to make a pin a headline of an article or blog post. 

It’s often referred to as Article Rich Pins. Applying for a rich pin and getting your pin validated by Pinterest allows you to create more sophisticated pins that perform best at featuring your blog post.

Why Bother With Rich Pins?

Without rich pins, users can still pin your blog’s content but will be less likely.

Why?

Typically, users will try to schedule pins using Tailwind’s chrome extension easily. Without a rich pin, your post will generate a poorly formatted pin without a description. However, with rich pins, you’ll auto-generate a pin that’s properly formatted and has a great description.

Pin 1-10 times daily. Pinning daily increases your Pinterest activity and builds your profile through growing boards and attracting re-pins from other users. It doesn’t take long to pin 1-10 pins a day, so make it a daily routine to do so instead of just scrolling through other social media platforms. 

Ensure your blog is optimized, so users have an exceptional experience. (i.e., fast load speed, brilliant design, great content). You use your Pinterest to promote your blog and make rich pins to drive traffic. 

If your blog site doesn’t help your Pinterest grow your brand because it’s slow and has a poor design, your efforts won’t reap much of the rewards you expect from it. 

Pour in as much effort into your blog as you do on your Pinterest. At the end of the day, your blog will be your primary source of earnings. 

Monetize Your Blog The Right Way

It will take time (6-12 months or more) before you make any money. 

Remember, you’re building an asset that has the potential to replace your 9-5 if you dedicate enough time and are patient with the results. 

I’ve made a mistake in the past of expecting results too easily or paying attention to other bloggers who were experiencing success much quicker. Treat your blog like a business and set realistic expectations for your first year.
