A study has unveiled a surprising truth about Boomers that disproves stereotypes. Typically, generations become less narcissistic as they age, but this study revealed shocking results when comparing Boomers and Millennials.
Exploring Generational Narcissism
A study that was conducted a few years back studied 750 individuals with the aim of understanding how narcissistic different generations were.
Defining Narcissism
When discussing selfishness, the study refers to people who show self-interest without empathy or care for others. Generally speaking, having kids or a romantic partner helps reduce selfish behavior because one is forced to think about others.
Defining Hypersensitivity
The study also paid attention to “hypersensitivity,” which refers to how defensive people get when criticized. Being less defensive means less hypersensitivity.
Hypersensitivity Analysis
Surprisingly, the study found that Millennials were less hypersensitive than Boomers.
Unexpected Findings
Overall, researchers noticed a decline in narcissism as people reached 40. However, when researchers paid closer attention to Boomers, they noticed Boomers were more selfish than Millennials. This doesn’t follow previously held assumptions.
Decline with Age
Researchers believe Boomers are more selfish because they grew up with government privileges like social security.
Possible Explanations
One user commented, “They’re the angriest [and] meanest people in the whole office for literally no reason. They have houses, family and money but somehow something tiny can make their head explode.”
Mixed Reactions
“Told my boomer mom that her experience applying for colleges 50+ years ago isn’t relevant to my experience with getting loans/applying 15yrs ago. She straight up was not ok after…” stated a passionate user.
Impact on Behavior
One man said, “My father, who grew up in a small town as the son of two well-known parents, at 10 years old was able to get a job at the local grocer doing restocks and was paid cash under the table.”
Boomers vs. Millennials
Although this study doesn’t apply to all Boomers, it is shocking that overall, Boomers seem more selfish and sensitive than Millennials.
