“As a baby boomer, do you remember what you thought your elders believed when you were young?”

A curious online user posed this question in a popular forum. Let’s look at some of the ridiculous things baby boomers thought their elders believed.

Being Clueless About War

A user said, “F67 here, right in the middle of the boomers. As a lot of people have said, Vietnam was insane, but our parents didn’t seem to get what bothered us. They thought of war as WWII, something you did b/c it was right.”

Say “No” To Seat Belts

Who would think that seat belts could be viewed as a bad thing? Before you judge someone, remember most people still don’t accept crypto and the metaverse.

“As a 10-year-old, they seemed perfectly logical, yet many of the ‘grown-ups’ opposed their introduction,” another user remarked.

Inequality Was Never Cool

A user commented, “Girls were told outright that they could not be doctors, etc. It started in early childhood when we were expected to be neat and clean and helpless and our brothers expected to explore, try things and learn from their mistakes.”

Little Trust in Their Children

“My parents have a mix of millennials and generation Z kids, they saved for all of our colleges so we had no debt because that was all that mattered to them. My dad came from nothing and was able to send himself to college and build himself up. He no longer believes this is realistic for our generation and that breaks his heart,” one user said.

No Contracts

Another user commented, “He lived with them until he was 19, and the last 5 years of that time was him working/ hunting to fill their fridge full of food while Dad’s Dad worked as a volunteer firefighter. They basically made him think that, because they birthed him, he pretty much owed them a debt for life.”

No one should feel like they owe someone something out of guilt.

Robots Didn’t Take Over

It’s easy to look back and think people are silly for being afraid of computers taking their jobs.

Fast forward decades later, and computers are part of our everyday lives.

If we think crypto or the metaverse is silly, maybe we aren’t as different as our elders after all.

The New President

“They elected Nixon,” one user wrote, insinuating that the American public was stupid – and unable to detect an imposter – at that period of time.

The Stock Market Crash

“The previous generation f****** crashed the stock market in 1929 so badly that there was 10 years of people starving in the Great Depression so I’d say that’s probably #1.”

This statement could likewise be applied to the 2008 crisis. History can repeat itself!

Pollution Was a Myth

“My parents were uninvolved and unconcerned about pollution. Companies were dumping their industrial waste in rivers and the air with impunity.”

In the past, few people recycled plastic or worried about their impact on the planet. Was this an honest mistake?

Lack of Support

“For my mom, it was that her parents couldn’t understand why she wanted to go to college and refused to help beyond dropping her off at the dorm. They wanted her to go to a secretary school. My uncle had everything paid for by them through grad school,” one user commented.

Not-So-Good Schools

Someone remarked, “Badly functioning schools and school systems.”

Why were schools educating children so poorly? Was education not prioritized as it is now, or did school systems not understand how to educate properly?

Never Trusting Doctors

“Grandpa had no respect for doctors or for medicine,” one passionate user commented.

Medicine has advanced these past few decades, but it’s never easy to trust someone with your life.

They say history tends to repeat itself. Is this what’s happening with millennials and Gen X?

What’s something you’ve heard your elder say that you don’t quite agree with?
