There are some occupations that society holds in the highest esteem. Then some careers are less than respected by a large swath of people. To test this out, an online community was asked which jobs attracted society’s lousiest people. The responses are easy to agree with.

1. Multi-Level Marketing Executive

Multi-level marketing (MLM) companies are pyramid schemes that work by recruiting as many people as possible to sell a product. The sellers at the bottom of the pyramid make the least money, while the executives at the top make the most money from the sellers. These executives dangle false hopes to draw in more sellers, all of whom they profit from.

2. Paparazzi

Numerous commenters in the thread have a very low opinion of celebrity photographers. The most significant criticism is their tactics to obtain pictures of the rich and famous. Following stars around wherever they go and violating their privacy for money isn’t a respectable way to make a living — it’s a dirty way to earn a living.

3. Timeshare Sales

Timeshares can be a messy real estate investment to make. Their contracts are expensive and have notoriously strict terms, making them difficult to sell. Unsurprisingly, timeshare salespeople are known for their aggressive, overbearing approach. It takes a pushy person to wrangle people into throwing their money away on a property they own a fraction of.

4. Megachurch Pastor

According to a user in the discussion, with a well-earned reputation for lifestyles that could be described as decadent, megachurch pastors seemingly attract people who use monetary donations for personal gain. “They take advantage of people who don’t know better, and use their money to fund their new luxury cars and mansions,” another person writes.

5. Funeral Sales

The death of a loved one is a difficult time for many. This leaves people vulnerable to manipulative sales pitches regarding final services. Someone observes that sales tactics such as unnecessarily upselling burial plots, caskets, and floral arrangements are designed to guilt the bereaved into spending more money than they intended to honor the deceased.

6. Medium

What happens after a person dies is not known to the living. The fear of the unknown drives people to seek out the services of mediums. By claiming they can communicate with the dead, mediums play on the emotions of their clients for a tidy profit. They use vague references and visual clues to make themselves sound legitimate, deceiving those who want to believe.

7. Payday Lender

For people with little to no access to traditional banking services, payday lenders seem like a viable alternative to obtaining cash when they need it most. But these businesses employ predatory loan practices to keep their customers perpetually indebted, like charging extremely high-interest rates. Payday lenders profit from desperate people with limited options.

8. Video Pranksters

A good-natured prank that everyone can laugh with and enjoy is one thing. A mean-spirited joke meant to humiliate someone isn’t funny, contributors in the discussion acknowledge. Many online pranksters make money by staging elaborate hoaxes to embarrass their targets. Cheap laughs at someone else’s expense aren’t cool.

9. House Flippers

They buy fixer-upper houses cheaply, do minimal renovations using the lowest-priced materials, and resell them at unjustifiably bloated prices. House flippers are one of the reasons why many aspiring homebuyers are being priced out of the market, a contributor laments. Their pursuit of profits prevents others from achieving their dream of home ownership.

10. Lobbyists

Lobbyists advocate and influence lawmakers on behalf of specific causes and industries. Because they’re paid exceptionally well, they’ll aggressively pursue their agenda until they get their way. This has given them a bad reputation, especially when they promote issues that are unpopular or are against the greater good.
