2. Leaning Tower of Pisa, Italy
One overly hyped destination is the Leaning Tower of Pisa. Multitudes of individuals attempt to shoot the same picture you have seen on the internet hundreds of times.
Never mind the corny “pretend to hold up the tower” pictures. The renowned tower is considerably smaller than one may anticipate. Large crowds mean waiting in long queues before holding the lookout for your selfie.
3. Times Square, USA
Times Square is different from its portrayal on TV and social media. It is crowded 24/7, with dozens of visitors taking selfies and hundreds of working people wishing there were fewer tourists. You’ll be surrounded by dozens of individuals wanting the same thing or detest you for being there.
And then there are off-brand costume characters to contend with.
4. Stonehenge, England
Since visitors are prohibited from coming within a certain distance of the stones, many argue that a simple drive by the landmark is preferable to paying to only look at Stonehenge from afar.
Stonehenge is located in a more out-of-the-way section of England, requiring a two-and-a-half-hour trip from London. This means visiting Stonehenge costs significantly more than the admission fee to see, NOT touch, the monument.
5. Champs-Élysées, France
Widely held as a romantic site, Champs-Élysées is full of overpriced clothing, with retailers selling familiar names at shocking prices. Its restaurants are also inferior to Parisian chain restaurants. They sell tourist experiences without the local feel.
It is best to view it simply as a road like the locals do to spare more time for other worthy attractions.
6. Taj Mahal, India
If your forte is pushing and shoving against hundreds of other visitors to get the best photo of the Taj Mahal’s beautiful architecture, by all means, enjoy your stay at this Indian location, which has an estimated eight million people passing through its gates yearly. If you’re set on seeing this historical landmark, an early arrival will help you escape the crowds.
7. Cancun, Mexico
Overall, Cancun is just a giant trap of a tourist sight that can be imagined. You’ll spend more time dodging annoying distractions like young spring breakers eager to get hammered on margaritas and timeshare presentations than genuinely enjoying this beautiful beach town.
8. Sydney Fish Market, Australia
A trip to Sydney should be on every bucket list, but avoiding the crowds and high prices at the Sydney Fish Market is better. Anticipating that many people visit this Southern Hemisphere’s largest fish market because of its reputation is a confident expectation. Still, the lackluster selection and the sky-high costs become an unpleasant surprise.
9. Dunn’s River Falls, Jamaica
The ascent of these waterfalls is no easy feat; you’ll need to cling to the hands of those around you to survive the rushing water and the treacherous climb.
You’ll also have to cope with a never-ending stream of pushy salespeople and tour guides trying to upsell you on overpriced excursions and products under the guise of “great deals.” Despite its popularity, if you want to see a stunning waterfall in Jamaica without dealing with crowds of tourists or scam artists, you won’t have to go far to find one.
10. Benoa, Indonesia
Most people know this area of Indonesia as a tourist trap, even though its coasts are known to have excellent snorkeling. The waters could be cleaner than they’re made out to be; you’ll have better luck at other beaches that are adequately maintained. Generally, be wary of scammers; if a deal seems too good to be true, it is.
